Any dog registered in the ROI who, in official ENCI events, evaluated by an expert breed specialist judge, can be registered in the Register of selected reproductor:
The Selected Sire must be checked for the most significant hereditary pathologies for each breed, as proposed by the respective specialized breed associations and approved by the ENCI Central Technical Commission (CTC).
The specialized breed associations such as the CPMA (Circolo del Pastore Maremmano Abruzzese) propose for the approval of the CTC objectives and selection criteria as well as the requirements for admission to natural reproduction or artificial insemination.
With the Maremma Abruzzese Sheep Dog, access to the selected reproduction is made using reproducers who are first registered in the ROI register. As you well know, our breed has open registers (that is, dogs with unknown genealogy can be recognized as progenitors) because the “rustic” population without genealogical documents still working with the sheep is significant and is a precious asset for the selection, representing an important pool of genetic variability.
The dog, son of an Unknown parent (NN), which obtains the recognition of the breed, is registered in the RSR (Recognized Supplementary Register). Soon and grandsoon will be registered in the same register. Only from the next generation (from the fourth generation) the puppies will be automatically registered in the ROI (Register of Italian Origins) and will have the possibility of becoming selected sires only if they obtain the qualification of EXCELLENT (for males) or VERY GOOD (for females) in a special show or gathering of breed.
It goes without saying that the desirable use of “pastoral” dogs in dog selection will not produce a lineage certified by selected breeders. It will therefore be the task of the conscious and wise breeder to know how to mix the bloodlines well in order to obtain a good percentage of healthy, “useful” and beautiful dogs.
Another necessary condition for obtaining the qualification of “Selected Reproducer” is the passing of the Character Morphological Test.
The Morpho-Character Test (TMC) is a test organized by the specialized club and guarantees that the subject who passes the test:
- is free from hip and elbow dysplasia (hereditary disease considered significant for this breed). In fact, only dogs with hip dysplasia grade A or B and elbow dysplasia 0 (zero), BL (Border Line) or 1 are admitted to the TMC.
- passed the character test. The character test takes place through tests designed to verify the absence of imbalances, fears or bad relationship with man that could preclude work or simply coexistence in an anthropized environment. Testing is conducted by a probation judge appointed by the CPMA Board of Directors. We remind you that work in a highly man-made environment is typical of our breed and distinguishes it from other guardian dogs born and selected in extensive semi-desert work environments.
- has been judged compliant with the standard after dog measurements and weighing by an Expert Breed Specialist Judge.
- has deposited, at an authorized ENCI center, the biological sample useful for subsequently tracing the progeny, giving the possibility of verifying the veracity of the registration certificate (pedigree).
The pedigrees of the puppies born from the mating of parents both certified as SELECTED REPRODUCERS, will have the particular and unique PINK color to distinguish them from the ROI pedigree (brown) and the RSR pedigree (green).
